FOOD NEWS: TASTE OF THE COUNTRYSIDE

We're bringing the freshest tastes of the countryside into the heart of the city with a special culinary evening organised with the beautiful Barnsley House Hotel.

The boutique hotel’s famous gardens provide the perfect inspiration for the event on Wednesday August 8 at our Second Floor Restaurant. Our Head Chef Louise McCrimmon – recently voted chef of the year in the Bristol Good Food Awards – will spend the day at Barnsley House, near Cirencester, to pick a range of fresh vegetables, fruit and herbs. She will then head back to the store with her selection of ingredients and create a delicious menu that perfectly showcases the hotel’s gardens.

The evening is designed to appeal to both the green-fingered and foodie fans alike. As well as the three-course meal, guests will also be entertained by Richard Gatenby, Head Gardener at Barnsley House. He will talk about the showpiece grounds, developed by internationally-acclaimed designer Rosemary Verey, and future plans for the famous Temple Garden and The Spa Garden, and the conservation of the treasured Simon Verity sculptures.

Following the success of last year’s event, we are delighted to again be working so closely with Barnsley House Hotel,” explains Louise. “This evening gives diners the chance to get a real insight into the famous gardens developed by celebrated horticulturalist Rosemary Verey and hear from Richard about their future plans. Guests also get to enjoy some of the freshest seasonal produce available – literally food to fork in less than 24 hours.”

The event starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £35 per head to include a three-course meal, coffee and petit fours, as well as the after-dinner talk.

For further details or to book your place, please call the Second Floor Restaurant on 0117 916 8898.

NEW LAUNCH: STYLE WITH A CONSCIENCE

New in store for A/W12 is the luxury fashion label Beulah London. Available in the city for the first time, the striking ‘Butterfly Effect’ collection features signature silk evening gowns in emerald green, fiery red and sapphire blue.

Renowned as a favourite of both Kate and Pippa Middleton, the dresses are available in shorter cocktail lengths, making them perfect for all occasions. There are also exquisite separates, including pussy bow blouses, printed shell tops and maxi skirts.

As well as creating beautifully crafted silk garments, Beulah London has a strong ethical conscience. Founded by Natasha Rufus-Isaacs and Lavinia Brennan, the ethos of the brand is to help victims of human trafficking and the sex trade. Certain pieces have been produced through the Open Hand project in Delhi or created to specifically raise awareness or funds.

“Beulah believes in empowerment through employment,” Natasha Rufus-Isaacs and Lavinia Brennan explain. “By employing women who have been victims of human trafficking in India as part of our production lines, it means that for every beautiful Beulah London dress designed, there’s an equally beautiful change happening somewhere else in the world.

“The ‘butterfly effect’ is defined as a phenomenon whereby a small change at one place in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere. This comes alive through every Beulah London purchase, helping break the chains of poverty in some of the world's most marginalised communities.”

Prices for Beulah London’s Butterfly Effect collection range from £170 for a printed shell top with three quarter length sleeves, to £790 for a luxurious evening gown with cut-out back detailing.

NEWS: TOP AWARDS FOR OUR HEAD CHEF

We're certainly in a celebratory mood this morning after our amazing Head Chef Louise McCrimmon walked off with the Best Chef honour at last night's Bristol Good Food Awards. Along with her team, she was also highly commended in the Best Restaurant category.

So yes, we're all feeling very proud of Louise, who has been at the helm of our award-winning restaurant since it opened in 2008. With a passion for local produce, her exciting menus have won a legion of fans, from national food critics to the city’s trend-setters.

“It is such a pleasure to be honoured in Bristol’s prestigious food awards for doing something I absolutely love,” she says. “It is a privilege to work in a city that recognises its vibrant food scene in such a way.”

The Bristol Good Food Awards were announced last night (Tuesday July 3) at a glittering ceremony at the City’s Museum & Art Gallery hosted by wine and food expert Angela Mount. Each category was opened to public voting in May before a team of expert judges picked the winners from the shortlist.

“To be judged not only by a panel of experts but also by the people who eat in our restaurant every day is such a huge honour,” adds Louise. “This award recognises the hard work and dedication from the whole team at the Second Floor and we couldn’t be more proud.”
