FASHION CLASSIC: WRAPPING UP IN STYLE

A coat is one of winter’s wardrobe essentials – but that doesn’t mean you have to forsake fashion for practicality.

Of all the fashion must-haves that tempt us throughout the year, a winter coat is our most important – and costly – investment. Of course it needs to be practical; after all it has to keep us warm and wrapped up as the temperatures plummet. But equally, we want something that cuts a dash when it comes to style.

Because you’ll wear your coat probably more than any other item you own it needs to suit your lifestyle and your fashion sense – something that fits perfectly into your wardrobe and instantly pulls outfits together. So, if you into boho chic there’s no point plumping for a severely tailored gabardine coat; likewise, if you a fan of minimalist style then you’ll want to steer clear of an eccentrically styled number.

So to help you shop wisely, here’s a few tips in picking up the perfect coat:

* Embrace the bold and the beautiful: Nothing will cheer you up on a drab and dreary winter’s day than a vibrant pop of colour. Rainbow hues work fabulously well with a wardrobe that is predominantly filled to the brim with black.

* Give yourself some room: Don’t go for anything too tight as winter dressing is all about layering. Have enough room under your coat to wear chunky knits and make sure you check the sleeves are wide enough to accommodate a jumper and gloves.

* Don’t follow the trends too slavishly: Great that you keep one eye on the key looks, but remember you want your coat to go the distance. You can always pick up on trends with accessories, such as patterned tights and boots.

* Find a style that suits your shape: Longer lengths are ideal for taller figures, while cropped looks great on petites. If you want to look slimmer, steer clear of quilted puffer coats.

* A good investment: Cheap rarely makes long-term economic sense – invest in the best and you’ll get a coat that will last years rather than seasons.

FASHION TREND: THE SWINGING SIXTIES

DKNY - Colour block shift dress  DKNY - Block print skirt dress

Fashion’s time machine has landed slap bang in the middle of the Swinging Sixties as mod chic comes to the fore. Echoing the decade of fashion revolution, the look is all about pop art dresses and boxy silhouettes teamed with stylishly feminine accessories in a range of experimental hues.

Playful yet ultra womanly, miniskirts, polo necks and dropped waists have been seen on the catwalks at Valentino and Calvin Klein. Prada, Jil Sander and Donna Karan opted for graphic prints, houndstooth and original monochrome … a definite nod towards 60s supermodels Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton.

The trend also heralds the return of the classic Sixties two piece, a la Alberta Ferretti and Ermano Scervino. A great choice for the winter, simply team a bold, structured tunic with tailored pencil trousers.

Finish off with cutesy kitten heels or ballet flats then just add a scooter, a flick or eyeliner and a beehive and you’re ready to swing!

Pictured, top row: colour block shift dress, £260 and block print dress, £260, both DKNY.
